What is play-based learning?

Play-based learning is an approach where children learn through exploration and interaction with their environment. Through purposeful play, children can develop a wide range of skills, from cognitive to social.

At Lily Valley, we believe that play is a natural part of childhood development – one that synergises perfectly with our Reggio-Emilia-inspired curriculum.

How we inspire discovery through play at Lily Valley Preschool

Our Reggio-Emilia-inspired approach sees children learning through a balanced mix of free play and structured activities. In this way, our teachers can nurture children’s creativity and curiosity through carefully designed play-based learning.

1. Hands-on activities in specialised ateliers

Our special learning ateliers have been designed as dedicated learning areas that inspire experimentation. We have a light atelier where children discover the interplay of light and shadow, for example, or an art atelier where they can learn through various media.

Children in our preschool spend time in the ateliers daily, getting hands-on experiences that encourage them to explore and express themselves across different domains. And they have fun!

2. Supporting child-led exploration

Our curriculum is deeply rooted in the Reggio Emilia philosophy, which encourages child-centred exploration. At Lily Valley, children take charge of their learning and teachers support their natural curiosities and offer guided free play.

This means children are encouraged to ask questions, explore ideas, solve problems and even delve deeper into topics of interest. Our teachers provide the tools, resources and support, but the children seek and discover answers on their own.

3. Collaboration and social development

Children learn through shared play in our preschool, letting them practise communication, cooperation, and negotiation. It provides them with opportunities to navigate conflict and discover empathy.

In the process, they develop meaningful relationships and communication skills that will last the rest of their lives.

Discover learning through play in our special ateliers

Light opens the door to discovery, and our atelier invites children to experiment with its many possibilities. Past installations in our Light Atelier, such as A Garden of Discovery, immersed children in a luminous landscape of glowing lotus blossoms, inspiring their exploration of Chinese culture.
The digital world offers endless possibilities for curious young minds. In this hands-on space, innovation and technology become tools for exploration and learning. Past experiences, such as the multi-sensory Enchanted Forest Exhibition, immersed children in play and wonder through technology.
Our art atelier is where young minds discover the many media available for their creative expression. From creating fabric forests to exploring new symbols of visual representation, children push their own boundaries in art and design.
Food, culinary technique, and chemistry come together in this atelier. Here, children explore not just only the methods of preparing food but also their origins. The school chef introduces them to various techniques and the science that operates behind food preparation.
This unique atelier is where our children take part in seasonal gardening projects to feed their senses and commune with nature. We introduce them to the idea of growing their own food, as well as the many wonders of the natural world and its bounty.
